Birmingham City University sponsors engineering taster week for young Biomedical engineers

From 2nd – 4th July, thirty-eight promising young engineers from across the UK attended a Biomedical Engineering course, sponsored and hosted by Birmingham City University. Organised by The Smallpeice Trust, the three-day residential programme provided 15 and 16-year-old students with an understanding about the captivating world of biomedical engineering and encouraged them to take up careers in this sector.

Over the duration of the course, students took part in a series of masterclasses and laboratory demonstrations covering topics including rehabilitation, fixing fractures, implants and medical sensors. They were also invited to talk to prospective engineers, scientists and senior academics about the varied career paths they could take in biomedical engineering.

As well as exploring the overarching principles of biomedical engineering, the course gave students aged 16 and 17, the chance to have fun working as a team, build their confidence and sharpen their problem solving, time management, planning, and presentation skills. They also had fun with their peers in social activities and a celebratory course dinner on the last evening of the course.

The Biomedical Engineering course is organised by independent charity, The Smallpeice Trust, and is part of an on-going programme of residential courses to help young people aged 12 to 18 learn and develop skills in engineering, design, technology, and manufacturing.
